If what you want is a story that holds together, this is the difference

Character.AI is a place to talk to a character. This is a place to play a campaign in a world that was read before you arrived. Both use a language model and that is about where the resemblance stops — one is a conversation, the other is a game with a referee that can tell you no.

Where this is different

The world is read before your first turn, not remembered from the chat

The commonest complaint about long chats is that the model quietly forgets — a character loses their voice, a place loses its details, something established in hour one is contradicted in hour four. That happens because a chat is held in a context window, and when the conversation outgrows it the oldest parts are summarised away. Here the setting is extracted into a store of world facts BEFORE play starts, and each turn pulls back the entries that bear on what you just did. The scene is what is recent; the world is not.

A referee settles what happened before the narrator writes a word

A chat model is agreeable by construction, so it tends to let you succeed at whatever you describe well. Here your attempt is weighed against your character sheet and the state of the scene first, and the verdict is settled in code — then the narrator is told what happened and has to write that. It is the reason a plan can fail here, and the reason succeeding means anything.

Consequences are on file, so factions stay angry

Side with one faction and the others are still holding what you did, because what happened is written back into the same world store the next turn reads from. Nothing here will let three rival powers all be pleased with you at once.

Your own book can be the world

Upload a novel and it is read into a world you can play inside — its factions, its places, what already happened — rather than pasted into a description field and hoped over.
