Character AI Alternative: Four Options, and When to Stay

Most people looking for a Character AI alternative are not looking for a better chat window. They are looking for the thing the chat window keeps almost giving them: a story that holds together, in a world that stays the same from one session to the next. Character.AI is very good at a conversation with somebody. It is not built around a world, and that is the gap the alternatives below compete in.

The short verdict

What Character.AI actually is in September 2026

It is worth being precise, because Character.AI has moved. In its own words on its blog, its goal is “to power new formats for users to interact with their favorite characters, stories, and communities”, and the things it has shipped around that are Books, studio-made microdramas in Series, and story-transforming Comics (Character.AI blog, 18 September 2026). That is a fandom entertainment platform, and it is a coherent thing to be. It is simply not the same product as a role-playing campaign with persistent state.

Two other facts are worth knowing before you choose, both from Character.AI’s own posts:

“Last year, we removed open-ended chat with Characters for users under 18, a decision that remains one of the most significant safety decisions we have ever [made]”

Character.AI blog, 3 September 2026

And on 18 September 2026 the company announced that its CEO, Karandeep Anand, is joining Disney as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, and “expects to be joined by members of Character’s technical team”. The same post says plainly: “The app is still live and online.” Nothing there says the service is going away, and you should not read it as such. It does mean that if your reason for looking around is “where else could I take this”, the question is a reasonable one to be asking now.

One practical note: Character.AI does not publish a public pricing page: there is no character.ai/pricing to read, and the site asks you to sign in before it shows you much (checked September 2026). The comparison below therefore quotes prices only where the vendor publishes them.

LLM RPG: when the world is a book

LLM RPG takes the opposite approach to a character library: instead of chatting with someone else’s Character, you hand it a novel and play inside it. You upload a .txt or .epub, it reads the book and builds an atlas of the characters, factions, locations and events in it, and then a game master narrates your own character’s turns grounded in that atlas. If you have never wanted a Character so much as you have wanted to stay in a world after the last page, this is the one aimed at you.

What it does not have is Character.AI’s library. There is no feed of ten million personalities to browse. There are 24 ready-made worlds if you have no book to hand, and after that, the world is whatever you bring.

On price, the published plans are a free start of 50 credits, Pro Monthly at $9.00/month, and Premium Monthly at $29.00/month narrated by a stronger game-master model. A narrated turn costs one credit on Free and Pro, and three on Premium. There is also a one-time 400-credit pack at $5.00 if you would rather not subscribe at all. The pricing page has the current detail.

Who should not pick it: if you want to talk to a character rather than act in a world, this is the wrong shape of product and you will feel it in the first ten minutes.

SillyTavern: when you want the controls

SillyTavern describes itself on its own home page as an “LLM Frontend for Power Users”, and that is an accurate warning label. It is free, open software that you install, and it does not come with a model: you connect one, whether that is a paid API or something running on your own hardware. In exchange you get the things a hosted service cannot offer: your chats on your own disk, your choice of model, and character cards you already own working out of the box.

The cost is real but it is not money. It is setup, and it is the ongoing work of hand-maintaining lorebooks so the model stops forgetting who somebody is. If that sounds like a hobby rather than a chore, SillyTavern is probably the best answer on this page. We wrote about that trade in more detail in A SillyTavern Alternative That Writes the Lorebook For You.

AI Dungeon: when you want the sandbox

AI Dungeon is the closest thing here to “Character.AI but a story”. Its free tier, Wanderer, is a genuinely playable game rather than a trial: AI Dungeon’s own guidebook states that it is “a free-to-play game, no matter what device you’re playing on”, though the free tier comes with no monthly credits and the smallest memory bank. The paid ladder above it runs from $14.99 to $99.99 a month on AI Dungeon’s pricing page, and what climbs with it is context and memory rather than the game itself.

Who should stay with AI Dungeon or choose it: if the pleasure is making a world up as you go, nothing on this page beats it. Our Is AI Dungeon free? and AI Dungeon review articles go deeper.

NovelAI: when you are writing, not playing

NovelAI is a writing and image product rather than a game. Its own site says story generation is “powered by GLM 4.6” and pitches an AI that “writes with you — not for you”, and its FAQ states that “subscriptions start at $10/month” with no free image tier beyond a trial. If your Character.AI sessions were really drafts in disguise, this is where those drafts want to live. If you want somebody else to be the game master, it is not.

How to switch without losing anything

Whichever way you go, the move is cheaper than it looks, because the thing you actually built on Character.AI is a scenario in your head, not a file format.

  1. Write down the world in a paragraph: who you were, where it was set, what was happening. That is all any of these need as a starting point.
  2. Pick by the verb, not by the feature list: talk (stay), play in a known world (LLM RPG), make one up (AI Dungeon), control everything (SillyTavern), write it down (NovelAI).
  3. Spend nothing on the first session. LLM RPG’s opening scene is free, AI Dungeon’s free tier is a real game, and SillyTavern is free software. There is no reason for the first evening to cost anything.
  4. Only then commit. A monthly plan is worth it once you know you came back twice.

The honest summary

Character.AI is not a failing product and this is not a reason to leave it. It has an enormous library, a free front door, and it is now pointed squarely at fandom entertainment (Books, Series, Comics) rather than at long campaigns. That focus is exactly why some of its users start looking around: the platform is getting better at the thing they were not there for.

If what you want is one world, held consistent, with somebody else keeping track of it while you play, that is a different product, and it is worth switching for. Start a run free and see whether the first scene feels like the thing you were trying to get out of a chat window.
