Jekyll and Hyde Game: Three Ways to Play Stevenson's London

If you want a Jekyll and Hyde game, there are three good ways to play one today. You can follow the mystery through foggy London in MazM: Jekyll and Hyde, a story adventure where you see the city through the eyes of the lawyer Utterson and of Hyde himself. You can sit across a table from a friend in Jekyll vs Hyde VR, a two-player card game where one of you plays reason and the other plays madness. Or you can step inside Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella as your own character, with a narrator that has read the book and answers whatever you type. Which one fits depends on whether you want a story told to you, a duel against a friend, or a London where you decide which door to knock on.

This guide goes through all three, says who each one is for, and ends with how to try the last one tonight without paying anything.

What people want from a Jekyll and Hyde game

The book is short, and the search covers a few different wishes. Most people typing it want one of these:

The claims about the two published games below are as of October 2026, read from each game’s Steam store page. The claims about the novella are read from its Project Gutenberg edition.

MazM: Jekyll and Hyde, the story adventure

MazM: Jekyll and Hyde is an adventure game developed by Growing Seeds and published by CFK. Its Steam page describes it plainly:

“MazM: Jekyll and Hyde” is a darkly entertaining adventure game based on the classic 1886 novel “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson, in which you’ll tackle the mystery from a totally new angle!

The angle is the pair of viewpoints. You play Mr. Utterson, the lawyer “hunting for clues to solve a disturbing mystery”, and you also play Mr. Hyde, “who has been pushed to his physical limits”. You walk the streets of London, search for clues, and move toward what the page promises is “an ending you would never expect”. The store page puts weight on mood: a dark, heavy London, with artwork and music chosen to make it feel eerie.

Pick it if you want the story of the book retold with care, with pictures and music, and you are happy to follow where the writers lead.

It is weaker for anyone who wants to make up their own moves. The story is written in advance, and the game decides what Utterson can try.

Jekyll vs Hyde VR, the card duel

Jekyll vs Hyde VR is a competitive card game for two, sold on Steam as an add-on for Table Party by DIVEXR. Its store page sets it up like this:

Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s legendary novel, Jekyll vs Hyde VR is a competitive 2-player trick-taking card game where players battle between reason and madness.

One player is Dr. Jekyll, trying to keep balance and control. The other is Mr. Hyde, pushing for chaos. The match runs over three rounds of card play, and the page sums it up as “Easy to learn. Difficult to master.”

Pick it if you have a friend to play against and you enjoy reading an opponent across a card table.

It is weaker for anyone playing alone, and for anyone who came for the book. The names are Stevenson’s, but the game is a contest of tricks, and there is no London in it to walk around.

Playing inside Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde as your own character

Both games borrow from one short book, and the book is built in a way that suits a different kind of play. Project Gutenberg, the free library of public domain books, describes it as “a Gothic horror novella published in 1886”, in which London lawyer Gabriel John Utterson “investigates strange occurrences involving his old friend Dr. Henry Jekyll and a murderous criminal named Edward Hyde”. It marks the book as public domain in the USA, offers it as an EPUB or a plain text file, and rates it fairly easy to read.

Stevenson tells most of the story from the outside. Utterson hears about Hyde before he meets him. His distant kinsman Enfield saw Hyde trample a child. A maid at her window sees a murder in the street. Poole the butler hears a voice behind the cabinet door that does not sound like his master’s. Dr. Lanyon sees something that ends his life. Almost everyone in the book sees one piece, and that is what makes it good to play: there is always someone else who could be standing in the fog with a different piece.

The third way to play is to step inside that book. You give a narrator the novella, and it reads it before you begin: the places, the people, how each one speaks and what each one wants. Then you make your own character and type what you do. There is no list of choices. You can be a clerk in Utterson’s office who copies the strange will, a constable on the beat the night of the Carew murder, a servant in Jekyll’s house who notices the laboratory light burning at odd hours, or a chemist who sold Jekyll the salt and wonders what it was for. The narrator keeps the world consistent with what Stevenson wrote, and a bad plan in a dark street is allowed to go badly.

This is what LLM RPG does. You upload a book as a .txt or .epub file, and it builds an atlas of that book’s world (characters, factions, places, items and events) before your first scene. The Project Gutenberg edition described above is a file you can upload, so Jekyll’s door in the by-street is one download away.

If you would rather start with no download at all, there is a ready-made horror world, The Hollow Sanctuary, in which a blizzard traps you in a mountain monastery whose monks have all vanished. It is an original world rather than Stevenson’s, but it plays the same way, and it is a quick test of whether typed horror suits you.

Pick it if what you want is to be inside the novella as yourself, asking your own questions and opening doors Utterson never tried, and you would rather start typing tonight than buy a game.

It is weaker for players who want pictures and music, or a friend across the table. It is a written story, read and typed, and it plays alone.

For more Victorian London played the same way, see the guides to a Sherlock Holmes game and a Dracula game. For the wider field, see solo role playing games and text-based RPG games.

How to start a Jekyll and Hyde game tonight

If playing inside the novella sounds like your kind of game, this is the whole path from nothing to your first scene.

  1. Try it with no account. Open The Hollow Sanctuary and play five turns. A few minutes tells you whether typing your own actions suits you.
  2. Sign up with your email if it does. You get a one-time code, no password.
  3. Download the novella. Get The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from Project Gutenberg, as a .txt or .epub file.
  4. Upload it. The narrator reads it and builds the world before you play, and you are shown what the reading costs before anything is spent.
  5. Make your character. A clerk who has read the will, a constable who saw a small man running from Carew’s body, a maid who has heard two voices in the cabinet.
  6. Type what you do. Then see who answers the door.

When one of the other two is the better choice

Pick by the evening you want. A story told with art and music: MazM: Jekyll and Hyde, where the writers walk you to an ending they chose. A duel with a friend: Jekyll vs Hyde VR, where one of you gets to be the monster. Both are made for that evening, and neither asks you to write a word.

Play inside the novella when the thing you want is the book itself: to stand at the door in the by-street, decide whether to knock, and find out what Stevenson’s London does with someone it was not expecting.
