AI Roleplaying: The Four Ways It Is Done, and Which One Fits You
AI roleplaying is not one thing, and picking the wrong kind is why most people bounce off it in a week. Four different products are sold under the phrase. One is a conversation with a character. One is software you install and wire to a model yourself. One is an open sandbox with no rules at all. One is a writing tool that happens to answer in the second person. They are all good at what they do. They are good at different things, and this page is about telling them apart before you spend an evening on the wrong one.
Everything below was read off each product’s own pages as of September 2026.
The short verdict
| If you want | Start with | What it costs to start |
|---|---|---|
| A character to talk to | Character.AI | Free account, sign up before you can look |
| Total control over the model and the prompt | SillyTavern | Free and open source, plus a backend you supply |
| An open story that goes anywhere | AI Dungeon | Free to play, paid tiers for more |
| A writing tool with unlimited text | NovelAI | $10 a month, free trial first |
| To play inside a book you have read | LLM RPG | Free, 50 credits to start |
What “AI roleplaying” actually means
Two questions separate every option on this page.
Who is the AI playing? In character chat the AI is a person and you talk to them. In world play the AI is the narrator and everyone else, and you are one character inside it. The first is a relationship. The second is a game.
Who keeps the world straight? This is the question that decides whether you are still playing in week three. Every model on the market writes a good scene. Far fewer of them remember that the scene happened, that the character you met is dead, and that the city you burned is still burning. Some products hand that job to you in the form of memory entries and lorebooks. Some do it themselves. The difference is invisible on your first turn and it is the whole experience by your twentieth.
Character.AI: roleplaying as a conversation
Character.AI is the biggest front door to AI roleplaying, and its pitch is the number of characters people have made. Visit it signed out in September 2026 and the page you get is a sign-up screen headed “Get access to 10M+ Characters”, offering Google, Apple or email. There is no public tour and no published pricing page to read before you join.
That shape tells you what it is for. You are there to meet somebody, not to run a campaign. Conversations are excellent, personas are sharp, and the library means you will find a character for almost any mood in about ten seconds.
Where it runs out is continuity across a long story. A chat is a chat, and the world around it is whatever the two of you happened to mention. If that is the gap you are feeling, the Character AI alternative comparison goes through the options in detail.
Stay with Character.AI if the character is the point. Move on if the world is.
SillyTavern: roleplaying you assemble yourself
SillyTavern is the power user’s answer, and it says so on the tin. Its documentation describes it as “a locally installed user interface that allows you to interact with text generation LLMs, image generation engines, and TTS voice models”, with a stated goal of giving users “as much utility and control over their LLM prompts as possible, embracing the steep learning curve as part of the fun”.
Three facts from that same page decide whether it is for you:
- It is free and open source, a community project with over 300 contributors and three years of independent development.
- It runs on anything that can run NodeJS 20 or higher, with Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and Docker installation guides.
- It does no thinking of its own. In its own words, “since SillyTavern is only an interface, you will need access to an LLM backend to provide inference.” AI Horde works out of the box, and it supports OpenAI-compatible APIs, KoboldAI, Tabby and more.
So the real cost of SillyTavern is measured in hours rather than dollars: setup, plus whatever your backend charges, plus the ongoing work of writing character cards and lorebook entries so the model remembers your world. Thousands of people enjoy that work. If you are not one of them, read the SillyTavern alternative that writes the lorebook for you.
Stay with SillyTavern if you want the controls. It has more of them than anything else here.
AI Dungeon: roleplaying as an open sandbox
AI Dungeon is the original, and its home page still leads with the same promise: “AI Dungeon is a free AI text adventure game where players create open-ended stories, explore interactive worlds, and guide every choice online or in the app.”
Open-ended is the word to notice. Nothing is off limits, nothing is enforced, and the story will follow you anywhere you push it. That freedom is genuinely fun and it is also the trade: with no rules, nothing tells you that what just happened should have been impossible. For what the free account covers and where the paid ladder starts, see is AI Dungeon free.
Stay with AI Dungeon if improvisation is the point and you do not mind being the one who remembers the plot.
NovelAI: roleplaying as writing
NovelAI is a writing tool that many people roleplay in, which is a different thing again. Its home page pitches story generation as “Write worlds that remember everything”, powered by GLM 4.6, beside an image generator that is half the product.
Its subscription documentation, as of September 2026, is refreshingly plain. Text generation and text-to-speech are unlimited on every paid tier, the tiers cost $10, $15 and $25 a month, and the difference between them for a writer is context size: Opus is described as the tier able to remember up to 28,672 tokens. The image-generation currency, Anlas, is the only thing rationed. Full detail is in NovelAI pricing.
Stay with NovelAI if you are writing and the roleplay is how you draft. The prose quality is the reason to be there.
Where a book-grounded game master fits
Every option above starts from a blank world that you or a stranger invented. LLM RPG starts from one somebody already wrote.
You upload a novel as .txt or .epub. It is read and turned into a searchable
atlas of the people, places and events in it, and the game master narrates from
that atlas while you play your own character inside the book. Contradictions get
cleaned up as the run goes, so a fact established in chapter two still holds forty
turns later without you filing it anywhere.
The trade is honest and worth stating: you cannot play a world that does not exist as a book. If you want to invent as you go, one of the four above is a better evening. If you have just finished something and do not want to leave, this is the one built for that.
On price, a free account gets 50 credits to start, a narrated turn costs one credit, and the opening scene of a run is free. Pro Monthly is $9.00/month for about 1000 turns, Premium Monthly is $29.00/month and narrates with a stronger game-master model at three credits a turn. There is a one-time 400-credit pack at $5.00 if you would rather not subscribe. Failed turns and unfinished extractions are refunded automatically, and you see what a book will cost before anything is spent. The pricing page carries the current detail.

How to spend one evening on this
- Decide which question you are answering. Do you want somebody to talk to, or a world to be in? That single answer removes three of the five options.
- Try the free path first. Character.AI, AI Dungeon and LLM RPG all let you play before paying, and NovelAI has a trial. There is no reason for the first evening to cost anything.
- Play twenty turns, not three. Everything on this page is impressive for three turns. Continuity is what you are actually shopping for, and it only shows up once the story has something to forget.
- Then pay for the one you came back to. A monthly plan is worth it after you know that, and not before.
