This game is for adults

LLM RPG is for people 18 and over. Its worlds hold violence, crime and adult themes, and nothing in them is softened.

Character AI Pricing: Every Plan and What It Actually Buys

Character AI pricing has three tiers as of September 2026: a free plan with unlimited messaging and ads, (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month in the US, and c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. None of those numbers are on a pricing page, because Character.AI does not publish one. They live in the help centre, spread across three articles, and that is the reason this question gets asked so often.

If you only wanted the numbers, you have them. The rest of this page is the part that decides whether the money is worth spending: what each tier actually changes about your sessions, and what none of them change.

What Character AI pricing looks like today

Every figure below is quoted from Character.AI’s own help centre as of September 2026. Prices move, and Character.AI says they vary by region, so check the app for your own price before you subscribe.

Two things in that table are worth reading twice.

The first is that unlimited messaging is on every tier, including free. The help centre is direct about it: “We are proud to continue offering free and unlimited messaging for ALL users.” You are not paying to keep talking. You are paying for speed, for quiet, and for a better chat style.

The second is that the memory pins stop at 30 and never go higher. Free gets 15, lite gets 30, and c.ai+ also gets 30. What c.ai+ adds on top is the Advanced Lorebook, not more pins.

What c.ai+ buys, in Character.AI’s own words

The c.ai+ FAQ lists what a subscription includes: subscribers “get to skip waiting rooms, enjoy lightning fast message generation, access an exclusive community channel with faster feedback and support, and display a c.ai+ membership badge”. On generation speed it is specific: c.ai+ messages are “currently generated approx. 2-3x faster”.

It is equally specific about what does not change:

Is the quality of Character responses changing for users who don’t have a c.ai+ subscription? No! The quality of responses has not changed for anyone.

That sentence is the most useful one on the whole page. c.ai+ is a speed and comfort subscription, not a smarter model. If your complaint about Character.AI is that it forgets things, drifts out of character, or contradicts what happened four messages ago, none of the three prices above are aimed at that complaint.

The $9.99 is the renewal price, not the price you first see

Character.AI runs promotional pricing, and its flash sale terms spell out how the two prices relate:

3-Month Offer: $14.99 upfront for the first 3 months of c.ai+, then $9.99/month thereafter, automatically. Annual Offer: $59.99 for the first year of c.ai+, then $94.99/year thereafter, automatically.

Both renew at the standard rate automatically, and the terms say you will not get a separate notice before that happens beyond what was disclosed at purchase. So the number to budget against is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, whatever the checkout screen offered you on day one. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and no partial refunds are issued for unused time.

Where (c.ai) lite fits

(c.ai) lite is the newest tier and the most misunderstood one, because it is a paid plan that still shows ads. Character.AI says so plainly: lite “reduces ads. It does not remove them.” Banner ads go away, interstitials get less frequent, and optional rewarded ads stay. “Ads are part of what keeps lite’s price lower.”

What lite genuinely changes is memory and comfort: 30 pins instead of 15, a detailed Memory Usage bar, chat wallpapers and bubble colours, less slow mode, and a daily allowance of messages on the premium chat styles (DeepSqueak and LongSqueak). When that daily allowance runs out, your chat continues on the free styles with nothing lost.

Pick lite if your problem is ads and pins. Pick c.ai+ if your problem is waiting and speed. At $4.99 against $9.99 the gap is small enough that the deciding question is usually how often you hit the waiting room.

Who should just stay on free

Most people. Free has unlimited messages, the full Character library, and the same response quality as the paid tiers by Character.AI’s own statement. The honest reasons to pay are a waiting room you keep landing in, ads you find intrusive, or the 15-pin memory limit biting on a long-running chat. If none of those are happening to you, the subscription buys you very little.

When the price is not the problem

There is a different reader who lands on this page, and it is worth naming them: the one comparing prices because the sessions themselves keep going wrong. The world resets. A character forgets a promise. The story you built over a week does not survive to the next evening.

No tier of Character AI pricing fixes that, because it is not a throughput problem. It is a problem of where the world comes from. On Character.AI the world lives in a Character’s definition plus whatever fits in the chat’s memory, and both are small on purpose.

LLM RPG takes the other approach. You upload a novel as a .txt or .epub, it reads the book and builds an atlas of its characters, factions, locations and events, and a game master narrates your own character’s turns grounded in that atlas. The lore is not something you pin. It is extracted from the book once and consulted every turn.

On price it works differently too, because it charges for turns rather than for speed. The pricing page has the detail: a free start of 50 credits, Pro Monthly at $9.00 a month for about 1000 narrated turns, and Premium Monthly at $29.00 a month narrated by a stronger game-master model at three credits a turn. A one-time pack of 400 credits is $5.00 if you would rather not subscribe. Failed turns and unfinished extractions are refunded automatically.

Who should not switch: if what you enjoy is talking to a character, browsing other people’s Characters, and having ten conversations going at once, Character.AI is built for that and LLM RPG is not. Nothing here is a better version of Character.AI. It is a different shape of evening.

How to try the comparison for free

You do not need to cancel anything to find out which one you want.

  1. Keep your Character.AI account. It is free, and there is no reason to close it while you are deciding.
  2. Play one session elsewhere with a book you have already read. Familiarity is the whole test: you will know immediately whether the narrator has the world straight, because you will catch the mistakes.
  3. Watch for the second evening. The question is never whether the first scene is fun. It is whether the world is still the same world tomorrow.
  4. Only then pay for either. A monthly plan is worth it once you know you came back.

If you want the fuller comparison rather than the prices, we wrote Character AI Alternative: Four Options, and When to Stay, and AI Roleplaying: The Four Ways It Is Done covers why these products feel so different despite looking alike.

The short version

Character AI pricing is $0, $4.99 and $9.99 a month, with an annual c.ai+ at $94.99 after the first year. Unlimited messaging is free on all three, response quality is identical on all three, and memory pins top out at 30. You are buying speed, quiet and chat styles. If what you actually want is a world that holds together, that is a different product, not a higher tier.
