This game is for adults

LLM RPG is for people 18 and over. Its worlds hold violence, crime and adult themes, and nothing in them is softened.

Janitor AI vs Character AI: Which Chat Platform Fits You?

Janitor AI vs Character AI comes down to what you want to control. Pick Character AI if you want a polished app with millions of characters, unlimited free messaging and clear paid tiers from $4.99 a month. Pick Janitor AI if you want a community bot library where creators script their own lore and subscribers can choose third-party models. Both are character chat platforms, and both leave the long-term continuity of a story mostly to you. If that last part is the real problem, there is a third option at the end.

Everything below about either platform comes from its own site or help centre, as of September 2026.

What Character AI is

Character AI’s sign-up screen offers access to “10M+ Characters”. You pick a character, or make one, and talk to it. Its help centre is explicit that the core experience costs nothing:

We are proud to continue offering free and unlimited messaging for ALL users.

What the free plan does carry is ads and a slow mode. Character AI answers to “chat styles” rather than model names: PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr are on every plan, while DeepSqueak and LongSqueak are premium.

Character AI plans and prices

Character AI has no single pricing page. The figures below are from its help centre articles as of September 2026, in US dollars.

PlanPrice (US)AdsPremium chat stylesPinsLorebook
Free$0FullNone15Basic
(c.ai) lite$4.99 a month, or $2.49 a weekFewerA daily amount30Basic
c.ai+$9.99 a month, or $94.99 a yearNoneUnlimited30Advanced

Two things are worth knowing before you pay. First, lite still shows ads. The help centre says so plainly: lite “reduces ads. It does not remove them.” Second, promotional offers renew at the standard rate. Its offer terms describe a 3-month deal at $14.99 upfront, “then $9.99/month thereafter, automatically”, and an annual deal at $59.99 for the first year, then $94.99 a year. Budget against $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, whatever the first charge says. Our Character AI pricing breakdown covers every tier in detail.

What Janitor AI is

Janitor AI’s home page is a feed of bots made by its community, filtered by tags such as Male, Female, Fictional, OC, Game, Anime, RPG and Books. It is a place to find a bot somebody wrote, or to write your own, and talk to it.

Its subscription FAQ, updated June 2026, lists what the free tier includes:

It also promises: “We will always keep a free option available for everyone.”

What Janitor+ adds

Janitor+ gives you everything on the free tier plus, in the FAQ’s own words, “5x more context for better memory”, “Priority access for faster replies” and “Monthly swipes with our best models”, along with a golden username, a checkmark and comment react emojis. Web subscriptions are billed through Stripe and can be cancelled from the Billing settings. We did not find a Janitor+ price published on its help desk, so we will not quote one here. Check the price in your account before you subscribe.

Memory: the question that decides most switches

Most people comparing these two are really asking one question: which one will remember my story? The honest answer is that both give you tools, and both expect you to use them.

On Janitor AI, memory is a budget you manage. Its help article on chat memory says:

JLLM (like all LLMs) has a limited “context window.” That’s just a fancy way of saying: there’s a max amount of text it can read at once. Around 8k-9k tokens, give or take.

The same article explains why “the bot forgets what happened five replies ago”, and recommends a structured memory template you fill in yourself: environment, relationship dynamic, current plot points, notes on each character, and important past events. Creators can also attach Scripts, which Janitor describes as a smart assistant that “whispers helpful information” to the character when a topic comes up. Good scripts make a steadier bot, but somebody has to write them.

On Character AI, memory is pins plus a lorebook. The free plan has 15 memory pins and a basic lorebook. Lite doubles the pins to 30 and adds a detailed Memory Usage bar. c.ai+ keeps 30 pins and upgrades the lorebook to advanced. Pins are the things you choose to keep in view, so again the work of deciding what matters is yours.

The practical difference:

Ads, speed and waiting

Character AI is clear about ads on each tier: full on free, fewer on lite, none on c.ai+. Its FAQ also describes a waiting room that appears “when the site experiences high load”, which c.ai+ subscribers skip. Janitor+ lists “Priority access for faster replies” as its speed perk. If you chat at peak hours every day, the paid tier on either side is mostly buying you out of the queue.

When you want a world rather than a chat partner

Both platforms are built around talking to one character. Many people start searching “Janitor AI vs Character AI” because their favourite chats turned into stories, and the stories kept falling apart. If you mostly want to live inside a fictional world you already love, a chat platform is the wrong shape.

That is the job LLM RPG does. You upload a novel as a .txt or .epub, it reads the book and builds an atlas of the characters, factions, places and events (you are shown what the reading costs before anything is spent), and a game master narrates your turns grounded in that atlas and in your run’s own memory. You create your own character and play inside the story. If you have no book to hand, there are ready-made worlds to start from.

It is not a replacement for either platform’s strengths. There is no community bot feed, no creator following, and no choice of model. It is a game with a narrator.

On price, you start with 50 free credits. Pro Monthly is $9.00 a month for about 1,000 narrated turns, and Premium Monthly is $29.00 a month for about the same number of turns narrated by a stronger game master. A one-time pack of 400 credits is $5.00. The pricing page has the details.

How to move between them

  1. Save what matters first. Copy your favourite character’s description and the key facts of your ongoing story into a note. Chat history does not move between these platforms.
  2. Recreate the character, not the transcript. On either side, a short definition plus a few pinned facts or memory entries gets you most of the way.
  3. Try the free tier for a week. Both platforms are usable free, so pay only once you know you are staying.
  4. If the story is the point, try a book. Start a run in LLM RPG on a novel you know well and see whether its game master keeps the lore straight.

The bottom line

Janitor AI vs Character AI is a choice between a creator-driven community with more levers and a polished app with a clear price ladder. Character AI is the easier start; Janitor AI is the deeper toolbox. If what you really want is to play inside a story that remembers itself, look past both.
