Character AI vs AI Dungeon: Chat Partner or Adventure?
Character AI vs AI Dungeon comes down to one question: do you want to talk to someone, or play through something? Character.AI is a conversation with a character. AI Dungeon is a text adventure where you type actions and the story answers. Both are free to start, both sell subscriptions, and both let you steer a story. They just put different things at the centre, and that difference decides which one will still feel right after a week.
The rest of this page compares them on the things that actually change your evenings: what each is built around, what the plans cost as of September 2026, how each one keeps track of what happened, and who should stay with which.
The short verdict
- Pick Character.AI if the point is the character. You want a companion, a fandom favourite, or a personality to bounce off, and a long scene is mostly dialogue.
- Pick AI Dungeon if the point is the adventure. You want to type “I climb the tower” and see what happens, build scenarios, and play community-made worlds.
- Look at a third option if what you really want is to play inside a world somebody already wrote, like a novel you just finished. Neither of these reads a book for you. More on that at the end.

What each one is built around
Character.AI: the character is the product
On Character.AI you pick a Character and talk. Scenes happen, but they happen through dialogue, and the thing you come back for is the personality on the other side. That makes it excellent for companionship, for trying out a voice, and for the kind of fandom play where the fun is hearing a favourite character answer.
Its help centre is clear that you never pay to keep talking:
We are proud to continue offering free and unlimited messaging for ALL users.
What you do pay for is comfort. The c.ai+ FAQ says subscribers “get to skip waiting rooms, enjoy lightning fast message generation”, and it is just as clear that the replies themselves are the same: “The content outputted by Characters is currently the same between c.ai and c.ai+.”
AI Dungeon: the adventure is the product
AI Dungeon describes itself on its own home page as “a free AI text adventure game where players create open-ended stories, explore interactive worlds, and guide every choice”. You are the main character. You type what you do, the AI narrates what happens, and tools like Undo, Retry and Edit let you steer when it goes somewhere you did not want.
Its guidebook is equally direct about price: it is “a free-to-play game, no matter what device you’re playing on.” Paid tiers exist to give the AI more room to think about your story, rather than to unlock the game.
What each costs
Character.AI plans
| Plan | Price (US) | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited messaging, full ads, 15 memory pins |
| (c.ai) lite | $4.99 / month or $2.49 / week | A daily amount of premium chat styles, fewer ads, 30 pins |
| c.ai+ | $9.99 / month or $94.99 / year | Unlimited premium chat styles, no ads, Advanced Lorebook |
Watch the promotional offers. Character.AI’s own sale terms describe a 3-month offer at $14.99 upfront that then renews at $9.99 a month, and an annual offer at $59.99 that renews at $94.99 a year, automatically. Budget against the renewal price. Our Character AI pricing article walks through every tier in detail.
AI Dungeon plans
AI Dungeon’s membership ladder runs from the free Wanderer tier through four paid tiers, each raising the monthly credits, the Memory Bank and the context window: Journey at $14.99 a month, Legend at $29.99, Mythic at $49.99 and Ultimate at $99.99, per its pricing page (play.aidungeon.com/pricing) on 1 October 2026. Check it before you subscribe. Above those sit the separate Shadow Tiers. If the free plan is all you need, Is AI Dungeon free? covers exactly where free stops.
The price gap is real, and it follows the product. Character.AI’s paid plans top out at $9.99 because the thing you pay for is speed and polish on a chat. AI Dungeon’s ladder climbs further because each step buys more of the thing a long adventure runs out of: context and memory.
How each one remembers
Memory is where long stories live or die, and the two take different routes.
Character.AI gives you memory pins: 15 on the free plan and 30 on either paid plan, plus a Lorebook, which is Basic on free and lite and Advanced on c.ai+. You pin the facts that matter and the Character keeps them in view.
AI Dungeon gives you more machinery. Its guidebook describes combining your adventure text with “AI Instructions, Story Summary, Plot Essentials, Author’s Notes, and relevant Story Cards” before each action, and warns that on a shorter context “the beginning of your Adventure will likely be trimmed”. Paying moves that trimming further back.
In both, you are the one keeping the world straight. You write the pins, the cards and the summary. That works well for a world you are inventing as you go. It is a lot of typing for a world that already exists in full somewhere else.
Who should stay where
Stay with Character.AI if:
- your favourite sessions are mostly conversation;
- you want a huge library of characters to try without writing anything;
- you are happy on free, or want a cheap plan that mainly removes waiting and ads.
Stay with AI Dungeon if:
- you think in actions and outcomes, like a text adventure;
- you enjoy building scenarios and playing ones the community made;
- you are willing to pay for more context once your adventures get long.
If you are weighing more than these two, our Character AI alternative and games like AI Dungeon articles each compare several options, and AI roleplaying lays out the whole category.
Switching from one to the other
Neither service imports the other’s chats or adventures, so a move is a fresh start either way.
- Character.AI to AI Dungeon: take the Character’s personality and the key facts from your pins and write them into Plot Essentials and a few Story Cards. Then describe your opening as an action rather than a greeting.
- AI Dungeon to Character.AI: find or create a Character that matches your protagonist’s companion, and put the facts from your Story Cards into its Lorebook and your pins.
Budget an evening for either move. The work is the world you carry in your head, and both services need you to type it back in.
When the world you want is in a book
There is one reader neither product was built for: someone who has just finished a novel and wants to keep going inside it as their own character. On Character.AI that means chatting with a Character someone made from the book. On AI Dungeon it means writing Story Cards for every person and place you remember. Either way you are rebuilding the lore by hand.
That is the job LLM RPG does. You upload the novel as a .txt or .epub,
it reads the book and builds an atlas of its characters, factions, locations and
events, and a game master narrates your character’s turns grounded in that
atlas. It remembers your run across turns and reloads, and it retires facts that
have been superseded so stale lore is not treated as canon. With no book to hand,
there are 24 ready-made worlds.
On price, you start with 50 free credits. Pro Monthly is $9.00 a month for about 1,000 turns, Premium Monthly is $29.00 a month with a stronger game master, and a one-time 400-credit pack costs $5.00. The pricing page has the details.
It is the wrong pick if you want to chat with a character rather than act in a world, or if you want to invent a world from nothing. For those, the two products above are the right comparison. If you do have a book you are not ready to leave, start a run free and see whether the first scene feels like the place you just left.
